- Meditation – “Hearing begets knowledge, but meditation begets devotion.” “Many say they cannot meditate, because they lack memory; but is it not rather because they lack affection?”
- Meditation is:
- Retiring from the world
 - Serious thinking upon God

 - Reasons we should provoke ourselves to meditate:
- Meditation is contrary to flesh and blood
 - Satan tries to hinder us

 - What should we meditate on?
- The corruption of your nature
 - The death and passion of Christ
- this produces repentance
 - this fires our hearts with love to God

 - evidences for our participation in heaven
- Were you convinced of sin?
 - Have you taken Christ on his terms?
 - Do you have the indwelling presence of the Spirit of God?

 - Uncertainty of earthly comforts
- This keeps us from being deceived by the world
 - This moderates our affections for them
 - This causes us to pursue certainty: grace

 - God’s severity against sin
 - Eternal life
- It is a spiritual life
 - It is a glorious life
 - It will cause us to long for spiritual life
 - It will comfort us in the shortness of natural life

 - What can meditation do?
- It makes the Word preached of profit
 - It quickens the affections
 - It causes transformation
 - It produces reformation

These thoughts on meditation are ... well ... worth meditating on!
