Quotes from The Farewell Discourse and Final Prayer of Jesus by D. A. Carson

Here are a few quotes from the second chapter of Carson's exposition of John 14-17:

"For troubled Christians there is little genuine comfort that is divorced from the significance of the events of that one weekend in Jerusalem and its environs almost two thousand years ago...But modern believers, too, best discover renewed faith and fortitude, not by clinging to isolated spiritual aphorisms and evangelical cliches, but by returning to a deep understanding of the historical and redemptive structure of their faith." (19-20)

"If we say that the eternal Son for the purposes of the incarnation abandoned some substantial measure of independence in the use of his divine prerogatives, we are less than perspicuous, but probably we more truly reflect the biblical givens." (37)

"Our faith in Jesus does not thrust us into a struggle where we are alone, where the outcome is unsure, where the promised blessing is reserved for the sweet by and by. Quite the contrary: our faith in Jesus thrusts us into a struggle in which the decisive battle has already been won, in which the promised eschatalogical blessing has already dawned even if it is not yet consummated." (43)
